In connection with Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, NATO wants to redeploy several of its AWACS reconnaissance aircraft, which are usually based in Germany, Romania.
This is reported by Tagesschau.
The machines are intended to support the increased presence of the Alliance in the region and to monitor Russian military activities, the NATO Air Force Command said.
The AWACS are scheduled to arrive at Otopeni Air Base near the Romanian capital of Bucharest next Tuesday and remain there for several weeks.
The airport is located only at a distance of about 200 kilometers from the eastern border of the EU and NATO country with Ukraine.
AWACS are based on Boeing 707 aircraft and thanks to their mushroom-shaped radar structure, they are able to find and identify other aircraft at a distance of more than 400 kilometers.
