The Ministry of Culture is developing a bill on the status of the English language in Ukraine

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine is developing a bill to transform the status of the English language in Ukraine as a language of international communication. This was announced at a briefing by First Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Rostislav Karandayev.

"Ukraine remains isolated from the EU and the rest of the world to a large extent by the language barrier. The transformation of the status of the English language in Ukraine is a step that should solve this problem. It is a necessity and it is Ukraine's strategic course regarding EU membership. In order to realize those challenges and tasks, which should help Ukrainian society to master English and give it a higher status, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, in accordance with the relevant order of the Prime Minister of Ukraine, has started to prepare a bill to ensure the functioning of English as a language of international communication, "- said Karandeyev.

Also, on the initiative of ICIP, an interdepartmental working group is being created in order to study which standards should be introduced and in which area. In addition to the bill, amendments to other legislative acts are also being developed.

"In our draft law it is assumed that there will be regulated the relationships associated with the use of English as a language of international communication in certain public spheres of public life. First of all, it is international communication. We also assume that amendments will be made to the Law on Education and the Law on Public Service. That is, in the future every civil servant or law enforcement officer should know the English language, "- said Karandeyev.

However, he added that none of the provisions of the draft law on the status of the English language can and will not be interpreted as aimed at narrowing the use of the Ukrainian language.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the creation of the College of Europe in Ukraine. It is planned that the College of Europe in Ukraine will become not only a professional basis for the European policy of Ukraine as a member of the EU, but also a contribution to the development of European institutions
