France promises to open Notre Dame de Paris rebuilt after fire in 2024

Notre Dame de Paris, rebuilt after a fire, is scheduled to reopen to the faithful and the public in 2024.

This was announced on Thursday by French Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak, reports France24.

She said that the cleaning phase of the restoration project has been completed, allowing work on the restoration to begin at the end of the summer.

Notre Dame Cathedral was closed for restoration after a fire destroyed its roof and spire in 2019, horrifying everyone watching the fire in France and around the world on television and social media.

"We are confident that 2024 will be the year when much of this work is completed, the year the cathedral is reopened to the faithful and the public," Abdul Malak said.

Shortly after the April 2019 fire, President Emmanuel Macron said the 12th-century-dated cathedral would be rebuilt and later promised to reopen it to the faithful before 2024, when France will host the Olympic Games.

The cathedral will be restored to its previous design, including the 96-meter spire designed by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the mid-1800s.

Once the security phase is completed in 2021 and the interior of the cathedral is cleaned, the renovation will include the restoration of the wooden structure of the roof, vaults and spire, among other things.
