Washington: An American Republican senator and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, John McCain, commented on reports that the administration of the US president Donald Tramp might have stopped assistance to the Syrian opposition.

"If these reports are correct, the administration plays directly into the hands of Vladimir Putin. To make any concession to Russia without having a broader strategy for Syria is irresponsible and short-sighted", - he said.

McCain stressed that the US presidential administration should form a holistic approach to the Middle East.

"The administration has yet to formulate its vision of Syria beyond the defeat of IGIL, not to mention the comprehensive approach to the Middle East," McCain said.

He noted that the key goal of the US strategy should be the removal of Syrian President Bashar Assad from power.

"The main pillar of US strategy should be the removal of Assad from power as part of the cessation of the brutal conflict in Syria, which spurred the growth of the IGSF due to its cruelty, the expansion of Iran's malign influence and undermined wider regional stability", - said senator.

Yesterday, the Washington Post reported, citing sources, that US President Donald Trump decided to end the CIA's program for arming and training the anti-government opposition in Syria.
