Russia convened meeting of UN Security Council on situation in Ukraine

Kyiv: Representatives of Russia initiated a meeting of the UN Security Council regarding the situation in Ukraine on February 12. This was said by the speaker of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN Oleh Nikolenko.

"We know that the Russian Federation appealed to the chairman of the UN Security Council with a request to convene a meeting of the Security Council on the situation in Ukraine on February 12. The declared reason is the fourth anniversary of the signing of the Minsk agreements," the diplomat said.

He noted that the Russian initiative is just another smoke screen, which aims to divert the attention of the UN member states from the first comprehensive discussion of Russian aggression against Ukraine at a special meeting of the UN General Assembly. It should take place on February 20 and will be devoted to the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian diplomat, nobody believes in the constructive role of Russia in resolving the conflict in the Donbas at the UN, so "convening this meeting of the Security Council seems especially cynical".

Nikolenko noted that Ukraine is using this event to draw attention to the real situation in the Donbas.
