NATO Secretary General: we do not want a new Cold War with Russia

Bucharest: All NATO actions in Eastern Europe are defensive and in no way aimed at increasing tension with Russia, as the Alliance does not want a new Cold War. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced this at a meeting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

"We are witnessing an increased military presence in the Black Sea. Allied aircraft continue to control the airspace of Bulgaria and Romania. The deployment of our troops is a response to Russia's aggressive actions against Ukraine. NATO's actions are defensive and in line with our commitments. We are concerned about the Russian military strengthening on our borders. Because of a lack of transparency, for example, in the military exercises "West-2017", this all leads to such actions on our part. We combine strong defense and meaningful dialogue and we will continue to urge Russia to honor its international obligations. Russia is our neighbor and we do not want a new Cold War. Our actions are aimed at preventing, rather than provoking, a conflict, "Stoltenberg said.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated the importance of open channels of communication with Russia.
