Russia counts on Western fatigue from the war in Ukraine - British ambassador

The Kremlin is waiting for the moment when Ukraine's allies will get tired of the war and stop supporting the AFU so actively. British Ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons said this in an interview with NV.

"It is quite clear that this is part of Russian expectations and Russian textbooks of modern warfare - they have always expected Western countries to be distracted. I believe that in this first phase of the war, the extraordinary unity of Western countries around sanctions, unity around military assistance, unity around political support for Ukraine almost certainly took Vladimir Putin by surprise. It was fantastic, but it wasn't surprising," the ambassador stressed.

According to Simmons, there has already begun to be a certain war weariness especially in the Western media. For example, the anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II in Britain "overshadowed" the news about the situation in Ukraine.

She also added that the most difficult period for Ukraine in 2022 will be from late fall to late winter, because that is when Russia will start blackmailing the West with gas exports.

"You need very clear calculations here, because sooner or later this problem will arise, and it will also be a natural part of checking how people in Europe feel about Russian military aggression," Simmons said.
