Kyiv: COVID-19 pandemic outbreak remains out of control as the world is approaching “the grimmest of milestones’’ of 1 million lives lost to the virus.
It was stated by Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres, UN press service reports.
"COVID-19 outbreak is not under control. Soon we’ll pass the grim milestone of 1 million lives lost to the virus’’, Guterres said.
He noted that the virus was the No. 1 global security threat in our world these days and that’s why he called for a global cease-fire on March 23 to tackle the pandemic.
“Many pin their hopes on a vaccine. But let’s be clear: there is no panacea in a pandemic. A vaccine alone cannot solve this crisis, certainly not in the near term,” Guterres added.
He emphasized that a vaccine must be affordable and available to all, saying it must be seen as a “global public good’’, but that implied a quantum leap in funding for the ACT-Accelerator and its COVAX Facility.
