Kyiv: U.S. President Trump on Tuesday said he had “a shot” to take out Syrian president Bashar al-Assad but didn’t take it because then-Defense Secretary James Mattis opposed the plan.
He made a comment about that in interview with Fox News TV channel.
I would've rather taken him out. I had him all set. Mattis (the then minister of defense – ed.) didn’t want to do it. Mattis was a highly overrated general," Trump remarked.
It should be reminded that in 2018 Trump was repeatedly declaring that rumors about planning Assad’s elimination weren’t true.
