Kiev: The National Assembly of Cuba (Parliament) for the first time since 1976 elected the President of the country and it was Miguel Diaz-Canel.

This was reported by the parliament press service on Twitter.

He was one of 17 presidential candidates.

For the candidacy of 59-year-old Diaz-Canelo, who still headed the Council of State of Cuba, 579 out of 605 deputies voted. Therefore, Diaz-Kanel will be the president of the country until 2023.

This was a kind of formality, since Diaz-Kanel has led Cuba as head of the State Council since April 2018. He was the first non-Castro man to lead Cuba since the communist revolution.

Since 1976, Cuba has not had a presidency - the head of state was the head of the Council of State. The presidential post was restored in 2019, when the new Constitution of the country came into force.
