Kyiv: The American aircraft carrier Hornet, which took part in World War II and sank 77 years ago, was found in the South Pacific. This is reported by the media.
It is known that it was also found the aircraft that were on the deck when the aircraft carrier sank.
“The Hornet aircraft carrier is known for its two campaigns — the Doolittle raid and participation in the Battle of Midway. The Raid Doolittle took place on April 18, 1942, then 16 medium B-25 bombers took off from the deck of the ship, which hit several targets in Japan,” the media wrote.
At the end of 1942, two torpedoes and four bombs hit the aircraft carrier, which caused a large-scale fire. After extinguishing the Hornet began to depart in tow.
The Americans took the crew from the ship and decided to sink it. 16 torpedoes were fired at it (9 of which hit the target), but the Hornet did not go to the bottom. The ship sank only after the Japanese ships, who came closer, fired six more torpedoes through it.
We recall that in Egypt, archaeologists have found ancient burials of the Ptolemaic, early Roman or even Byzantine periods.
