Kyiv: In the largest concert hall of the Romanian capital - the Bucharest Athenaeum, the official launch of the Romanian EU presidency was held.
“More unity and cohesion – this is the way we are proposing for the next six months, and we will have to pursue it all with consistency. We have a number of important dossiers on the European agenda, such as the negotiations on the future Multiannual Financial Framework post 2020, and the context of the Romanian Presidency will be marked by the elections for the future European Parliament. On this background, we will have to demonstrate that by unity and consensus we can define a new page of our common project” said Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.
He paid special attention to the fact that only being united and united can the role of Europe as a global political actor be enhanced.
Iohannis expressed the hope that the summit of the heads of state and government of the EU, which will be held on May 9 in Sibiu, will become an important stage in strengthening the unity of all members of the European Union.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, in turn, said that "Romania and Europe should move forward together, and Romania should become a member of the Schengen visa-free space".
Juncker emphasized at the same time that the EU does not make compromises when it comes to the rule of law and the fight against corruption.
Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila in her speech expressed her conviction that the EU presidency would be successful and fruitful, and would help strengthen the unity of EU members.
Heads of the European Council Donald Tusk (speaking in Romanian) and head of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani also spoke at the official opening ceremony of the Romanian EU presidency.
