Kyiv: Japan can locate US military bases on the territory of the Kuril Islands if Russia does not give it Shikotan and Habomai. This was announced by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Singapore.
“If the disputed islands of Habomai and Shikotan will be transferred to Japan in accordance with the joint declaration of 1956 as a result of bilateral negotiations, then American military bases will not be deployed on them,” the local media quoted the prime minister.
In addition, the press reports that negotiations with Moscow on territorial issues, and negotiations with Washington regarding military bases, Tokyo should be held in parallel.
It is known that according to the terms of the declaration signed between Japan and the Soviet Union in 1956, after signing a peace treaty, Moscow will have to transfer to Japan two islands of the South Kuril chain. The document was ratified by the two parties, but subsequently, Japan refused to fulfill these conditions.
