Strasbourg: On the first day of the 35th session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, which takes place in Strasbourg, the country members called on Ukraine to ensure the electoral rights of migrants.
The Council of Europe called on Ukraine to ensure the right for immigrants from the uncontrolled regions of Donbass and occupied Crimea to take part in the presidential elections in Ukraine.
A Dutch politician, Josa Winen, stressed that in Ukraine the number of internally displaced persons is almost 1.7 million.
“ Many of them are in a very difficult position to respect their rights, in particular, regarding their rights to vote in 2014 in the parliamentary elections and in 2015 in the local,” he stated.
According to the politician, immigrants should get a real opportunity to participate in elections, by eliminating the obstacles associated with excessive demands for obtaining registration at the place of residence.
Subsequently, the council noted that internally displaced persons should be able to choose their constituency by registration.
