Kyiv: On Wednesday morning, a volcano began to erupt on a central Indonesian island after an earthquake. Authorities warned aircraft of volcanic ash in the air.
A state volcanologist said it was possible the eruption was accelerated by an earthquake measuring 7.5 points in Central Sulawesi on Friday.
The eruption of a volcano in Soputan is not surprising, since Indonesia sits on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, and Soputan is one of the island’s most active volcanoes.
An earlier earthquake in Central Sulawesi led to a tsunami.
Earlier it was reported that the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides announced the allocation of humanitarian assistance to Indonesia, affected by disasters.
