Milan-Venice: Today, on October 22, in the Italian regions of Lombardy and Veneto, referendums are held, in which the residents can vote for giving the two regions extended autonomy. The referendum was officially announced in July.
The sites opened at 7:00 am local time, and close only at 23:00.
According to the Constitution of Italy, the regions have the right to request expanded autonomy within the state. Lombardy and Veneto for two produce 30% of the country's GDP (10% - Veneto, 20% - Lombardy).
In the early 1990s, the right-wing "League of the North", which is still at the head of local government in the regions, tried to declare independence of the state of Padania with its capital in Milan. Now they are defending the idea of the federalization of Italy and their rating in Veneto and Lombardy is growing steadily, reaching 35%.
