Ukraine has no other option but to completely liberate its territory - Ambassador

Ukraine's ambassador to Germany Oleksiy Makeev, commenting on fears that an attempt to return Crimea could lead to a dangerous escalation, said that Ukraine has no other option than to completely liberate its territories, including the peninsula.

Makeev said that it is important for Ukraine not only to restore sovereignty according to internationally recognized borders, but also to free Ukrainians in the occupied territories. He added that one can learn about the atrocities of the Russian invaders only after the territories are liberated, therefore "it is important to stop the Russian aggression and expel the Russians from all the occupied territories, in particular from Crimea."

The diplomat stressed that Ukraine and international partners do not need to "worry" about what is important for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin or for Russians and the Kremlin. Makeyev reminded that Russia committed an act of aggression back in 2014, and then the world "tried to influence" the Russian president with the help of sanctions, restrictions on his international activities, isolation of the aggressor country.

"But that didn't work, and Putin went ahead and started a full-scale war in Europe in the 21st century. So it's in our interest and in the interest of all our international partners to stop this aggressive war from Russia and help Ukraine win this war," - he noted.

According to him, the Ukrainian authorities understand the concerns of partners and conduct in-depth dialogue and negotiations with them regarding the planning and explanation of the next steps.
