Foreigners will be able to serve in Ukraine under a contract

The Verkhovna Rada determined the procedure for military service under contract by foreigners and stateless persons in all military formations. A total of 321 people's deputies supported the adoption of the relevant draft law No. 8098 at the plenary session on Thursday, Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a member of the "Voice" faction, reported.

As noted in the explanatory note, since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, many foreign citizens expressed a desire to voluntarily defend Ukraine with weapons in hand. For this purpose, a number of laws were passed, which established the grounds and procedure for serving foreign citizens and persons without Ukrainian citizenship, as well as providing these persons with legal grounds for staying on the territory of Ukraine.

However, when making changes to the legislation, only those units subordinated to the Armed Forces of Ukraine were indicated and did not include the units formed under the National Guard of Ukraine. Such a unit is the "Azov" regiment, where many foreign citizens serve. In this regard, foreign military personnel serving in the "Azov" regiment, in particular, cannot legally stay on the territory of Ukraine and will not be able to obtain Ukrainian citizenship in the future.

Draft law No. 8098 provides for the introduction of relevant amendments to the laws "On the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons", "On immigration", "On military duty and military service", "On the National Guard of Ukraine".

In addition, the law "On Immigration" proposes to expand the quotas that provide grounds for granting immigration permission to foreigners and stateless persons who have not yet served three years in the Armed Forces and other military formations, but during the service received injuries that prevent them from they should continue military service due to their health.
