Ukraine officially recognized the occupation of the Kuril Islands by Russia

The Verkhovna Rada passed a decision on an appeal to the international community by the Northern Territories of Japan, recognizing the occupation of the northern Japanese territories by Russia. People's deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported this in Telegram.

The decision was supported by 287 deputies. In the address, the Ukrainian parliament declared support for Japan's position regarding its Northern territories, namely the Kuril Islands, and recognized that these territories are under the occupation of Russia.

In addition, the Verkhovna Rada called on the international community to continue taking all possible measures for the contractual and legal registration of the status of Japan's Northern Territories.

The Northern Kuril Islands belong to Russia. However, Japan does not recognize their status and considers the islands to be its northern territory, which the USSR captured as a result of World War II.

At the end of April this year, for the first time since 2003, Japan called the Kuril Islands illegally occupied by Russia. The impetus for this was Russia's war in Ukraine, which Japan strongly condemned. On the shelf of the Kuril Islands, there are large reserves of hydrocarbons, as well as the extremely rare metal rhenium, which is used in rocketry and aircraft construction.
