Russian ambassador to Bulgaria will initiate closure of embassy after rejected ultimatum

Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria Eleonora Mitrofanova said that she would initiate the closure of the mission, since Sofia had not abandoned its decision to expel 70 embassy employees. This was reported by BGNES.

"Unfortunately, our appeal to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry was ignored. In this regard, I am going to immediately raise the issue with the leadership of my country of closing the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria, which will inevitably lead to the closure of the Bulgarian diplomatic mission in Moscow. Responsibility for further severe consequences of this step is entirely on the government of Kirill Petkov," Mitrofanova stated.

To recall, Bulgaria reported the expulsion of 70 diplomats and technical staff of the Russian embassy on June 28. Bulgaria, in particular, expelled the advisor-consul of Russia, consuls general in Varna and Ruse, the director of the cultural and information center. All diplomats and technical staff will be expelled from the Russian Consulate General in the town of Ruse in Bulgaria. All in all, about 200 people, including family members of those to be deported, must leave Bulgaria by July 3. Russian authorities claim that the work of the embassy and consulates general is now "virtually paralyzed.
