Tbilisi considers it unfair to grant EU candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, but not to Georgia

The head of the Georgian Dream government party Irakli Kobakhidze would consider it unfair if the European Union grants Ukraine and Moldova EU candidate status and Georgia does not.

Kobakhidze said this at a briefing on Thursday, reports "Georgia Online".

Kobakhidze noted that he perceives the European Parliament resolution adopted on Thursday as a hint to refuse to grant EU candidate status.

"The European Parliament resolution may be perceived as a kind of hint that Georgia, unlike Ukraine and Moldova, may not be granted EU candidate status. If this happens, of course, it will be a completely illogical and unfair decision, to which there will be a reaction from all the people interested in peace, rule of law and promotion of the economy in Georgia," Kobakhidze said.

According to him, according to the decision at the EU summit of June 23-24, the authorities will provide the public with "more information on behind-the-scenes developments around the candidate status and the relevant personal conversations.

Kobakhidze said the Georgian opposition is counting on non-provision of the status in order to organize protests and arrange a "coup" and eventually "drag Georgia into war.

On the eve the European Parliament adopted the resolution on "Violation of Media Freedom and Safety of Journalists in Georgia. The text calls for the release of the general director of opposition TV channel Mtavari Nika Gvaramia from jail, for sending former President Mikheil Saakashvili abroad for medical treatment and for imposing personal sanctions against the founder of Georgian Dream party Bidzina Ivanishvili.

European Parliament faction leaders also issued a call Thursday for the European Union summit to grant Ukraine and Moldova candidate status for accession, and for Georgia to "work toward such status."
