"Ukrenergo declares complete blackout of Chernobyl NPP due to actions of occupants, without SNF cooling radioactive substances could be released

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant has been completely de-energized by the actions of the Russian occupants, the system operator NEC Ukrenergo said.

"As a result of the hostile actions of the Russian occupants, the Chernobyl NPP is completely de-energized! The hostilities continue, making it impossible to repair work and restore power supply," the NEC said in a statement.

In turn, NNEGC "Energoatom" specified in its telegram channel that the blackout of all nuclear facilities of the exclusion zone is associated with the damage to the 750 kV ChNPP - substation "Kyivska", which also led to the blackout of the town of Slavutich.

"There are about 20,000 spent fuel assemblies in KNF-1. They need constant cooling, which is possible only if there is a power supply. If there isn't, the pumps won't produce cooling. As a consequence, the temperature in the spent fuel pools will rise, there will be steaming and release of radioactive substances into the environment. The wind may transport the radioactive cloud to other regions of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and Europe," reads the report.

The NAEK also notes that due to the blackout the ventilation at the site will not work and all personnel there will receive a dangerous dose of radiation.

"Also, the fire suppression system is not working. This is a huge risk in the event of a fire that could result from a projectile hit. At present, hostilities are ongoing, which makes it impossible to carry out repairs and resume power supply," Energoatom said.

As reported, the Russian military seized the territory of the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

Earlier, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) noted the cessation of remote transmission of data from the systems installed at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant to monitor compliance with safeguards. "At this point, no one understands what is happening in Chernobyl and what threatens the region. The situation is extremely dangerous," the IAEA said.
