Saakashvili's trial on illegal border crossing takes place amid protests

Against the background of the protest action in the Tbilisi City Court, another hearing in the case of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili's illegal border crossing is taking place today.

Dozens of Saakashvili's supporters, as well as members of the United National Movement party, which he founded, have gathered outside the court building. They believe that there were no criminal intentions in actions of ex-president and regard it exclusively as a political action.

"Our main demand is to end political persecution and release Georgia's third president," said activist Irakli Pavlenishvili, one of the protesters.

According to Novosti-Georgia news agency, the rally is peaceful and there have been no incidents. However, security measures have been strengthened - police has been mobilized at the site and metal fences are posted.

According to the lawyers, today the court will consider the evidence in the case. It is planned to question up to ten witnesses, as well as investigators and experts who conducted examinations in the case.
